Resolution

I led a team of 5 designs to create the Visual Identity for the DESN2024 Graduate Showcase. Independently organized by the students from Brand Identity to Venue.

Overview

Since the program's restructuring in 2020, the graduation show for York University's DESN program has been completely independently organized by students.

My Contributions

I was elected by my peers to lead the Branding and Identity committee. Because other teams were relying on the completion of the brand guidelines in order to produce their respective collateral, we had to work efficiently. I organized the team and assigned them sections on the book based on their strengths, conducted group and 1-on-1 meetings, and lead presentations for updates and concepts.

After the first version of the brand guideline was completed, The Branding Team continuously monitored the production of different elements of the show to ensure that all published material adhered to the guidelines.

Brand Guidelines

The over 80-page document is broken into sections:

Brand Position, Moodboard, Logo, Typography, Colours, Image Treatment, Motion, Assets, and Signifiers.

Website

The Web team worked diligently over the course of the year to collect data and implement assets into an online format.

The team received an RGD student award for web design in 2024.

Passport (Yearbook + Event Program)

We produced a 'Passport' to act as a student yearbook as well as a program to be used on the day of the event.

Each student received a stamp of their signifier that they would use to mark attendee's passports when visiting their booth. The passport also included the venue map, a page for each graduating student, space in the back for sponsorship advertisements, and credits for work on specific aspects of the show.

A small team, including myself, created the template layout for the passport pages and filled them in with collected info from the grads. I insisted on having the cover be UV foil stamped, which everyone was very excited to see brought to life and brought extra dimension to the final piece.

Merchandise

To demonstrate the brand's flexibility, we wanted to create merchandise as additional keepsakes for the grads and attendees.

Each grad received a custom laser-engraved dog tag near the halfway point of the semester, completed with their signifier and name.

We also had a select amount of merchandise for sale the day of the event, to raise money for the next year's grad show as a part of a 'legacy fund'.

In Reflection + Credits

I have truly never felt more pride than I did standing among my classmates watching our vision come to life. I continue to feel honoured that the trust was put in me by my peers to lead and deliver results. Being apart of this project made me feel alive in a way that I never had before, and I will continue to chase that feeling for the rest of my career.
